After qualifying as a General Nurse in 1978, specialising in Intensive Care Nursing, I entered academia. During my career at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ I have worked as a Lecturer, School of Nursing and Midwifery (1992-1999); Senior Lecturer (1999-2004); Reader & Head of Department (2003-20006) and became Professor of Palliative Care Nursing in 2006. I currently hold a Visiting Chair at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and an Honorary Chair at Anglia Ruskin University. I took retirement from the University and was awarded an Emeritus Professorship.
I have published over 200 papers in peer reviewed journals, including the BMJ, Age and Ageing and Palliative Medicine, amongst others. I have co-edited three best- selling text books in the area of palliative and end-of-life care and contributed to over to 10 book chapters.

- Research interests

My research for the past 25 years has been in palliative and end of life care, primarily in qualitative work, as well as the use of mixed methods. Over the past twenty five year I have been involved in a number of multi-disciplinary research projects and have led and contributed to 38 research grants and awards totalling over £28. 75 million, supported by NIHR, SDO, and EU amongst others.

I am currently REF Consultant to three UK Universities and continue to undertake Consultancy work at a number of UK Universities, as well as being involved in work for a number of international Research Councils. I also continue to undertake PhD Examinations.
