Dr John Llewellyn Evans obituary
Born 1933, died 2021. A graduate of the Department of Metallurgy (BMet 1954) and the Department of Refractories Technology (PhD 1958).
John was born in Blaengarw, a mining village in South Wales.
He attended Cowbridge Grammar School before entering ºù«Ӱҵ University in 1951 reading metallurgy. Following graduation, he carried out research into the high temperature properties of moulding sands under Professor James White and was awarded his PhD in 1958.
John married Betsi, his childhood sweetheart and they were happily married for 62 years. Betsi sadly passed away 11 weeks after him.
Following job moves to Birmingham, Newcastle and Chepstow they settled in Porthcawl where John became Departmental Manager - Energy at British Steel Technical in Port Talbot.
Of special note has been his work on blast furnace and stove design. He had a major influence on the design of the refractories and cooling of No. 4 blast furnace at Port Talbot and No. 2 blast furnace at Llanwern.
Following his retirement, he acted as a consultant for British Steel and Hinckley Group.
His passion outside work was rugby and he became a pillar of Porthcawl RFC and the community in general. A true gentleman who was respected by everyone who knew him.
John was a devoted family man who is survived by his sister Gaynor and brother David.
He was a wonderful father to Delyth and Rhodri, and he adored his grandchildren Millie, Tom, Harri and Lachie.
His death has left a void in our family, but we will celebrate his life, remember the love we shared and make him proud.
