My research project has inspired me to pursue a PhD
What does your project involve and what has been your experience?
My project focuses on investigating antagonistic interactions among plant-associated bacteria using advanced techniques such as Soft-Agar Overlay, Modified Spread-patch, Community Abundance Assay, and metabolomics/proteomics methods like FPLC and HPLC. Learning these technologies has been both challenging and rewarding, particularly the hands-on experience with Whole Genome Sequencing and electroporation. The best part has been collaborating with PhD students and postdocs, gaining insights into their research approaches and fostering a supportive lab environment.
Why is this research important and who will benefit?
This research is significant for enhancing our understanding of microbial dynamics in plant environments, which can lead to the development of new biocontrol strategies and biostimulants. Its applications in agriculture aim to improve crop productivity sustainably while reducing environmental impacts. Farmers, agronomists, and industries involved in agriculture and biotechnology stand to benefit from the practical applications derived from this research.
What are your future career plans and how do you feel this MSc will help you achieve these?
I plan to advance my studies by pursuing a PhD with a focus on soil bacteria research, likely continuing at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ under the same supervisor and within the same research group. I am aware of the challenges associated with a PhD, but I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained from my MRes will be instrumental in my success. After completing my PhD, I plan to return to my beloved home country, Indonesia, as I have also received a full scholarship from there. I am committed to dedicating myself to serving as a civil servant, particularly in the field of plant protection under the Ministry of Agriculture.
International scholarships
We offer a generous package of financial support for international students, including undergraduate and postgraduate taught scholarships towards the annual tuition fee. Applications are open for existing offer holders.
