Summer placement: conducting research into cancers cells and normal cells
Inspired by her first year module 鈥淩esearch in Biomedicine鈥, Nurkaiyisah spent this summer completing a 葫芦影业 Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) placement working on a project focussing on a topic that interests her, the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) internalisation in cancers cells and normal cells.

I found out about the SURE scheme, through one of my modules 鈥淐areer Development Skills鈥, whereby we were encouraged to partake in some sort of laboratory experience during the summer. This is as, in order to pursue a role involving research, it would be beneficial to have participated in ongoing research outside of our studies. As a Biomedical Science student I was exposed in my first year and second year to a variety of lab practicals for 3 hours per week.

Over the summer I looked at the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) internalization in cancers cells and normal cells to discern whether there is difference in both.

However, I felt that I didn鈥檛 get a good grasp on the lab techniques in a single session and how data would be collected over a longer period of time.

The SURE scheme allowed this and in addition to improving existing lab skills through repetitive experiments. I was able to explore a topic I was genuinely interested in and learn new skills, such as data quantification using software I haven鈥檛 used in my degree yet, how to write a conference abstract and poster dissemination.

Over the summer I looked at the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) internalization in cancers cells and normal cells to discern whether there is difference in both. I chose this project, as I attended a module in my first year called, 鈥淩esearch in Biomedicine鈥, which showcased scientists working in the university and their work and discoveries.

I then came to know about my supervisor through one of her lectures about a potential regulator of the ECM that when inhibited would prevent the formation of tumour cells and inspired me to work on a project with a similar focus.

As I learned how to master a few skills over a longer period of time, I felt this will help me in the long run, as now I can use these skills in my third year laboratory project with ease. In addition, I feel more confident about pursuing a career in research and now I鈥檓 considering pursuing a masters course in the same field.
