Sun shines bright for Christian monastery visit

We were blessed with beautiful sunshine for our 24-hour trip to a Christian monastery in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

Students overlooking the Yorkshire countryside

The Community of the Resurrection has welcomed us and groups of students several times before, yet it is always a treat to visit, this time with four students.

As we arrived on the Feast of Ascension (the day 39 days after Easter celebrating Jesus’ rising to Heaven) we were initially treated to an extra special lunch with the dozen monks.

Following a lunchtime conversation with several of the brothers, the students soon got stuck into monastic life with some gardening. This was followed by a walk into Mirfield for a well-earned ice cream!

Another Ascension Day treat was a spectacular Mass in the stunning chapel, contrasted in the evening by the solemnity of Compline.

The following morning we explored the extensive gardens before attending Mass. Lunch was our final meal with monks. Being on a Friday (the day of Jesus’ crucifixion) it was a silent meal, which was a powerful experience to end our visit with.
