ºù«Ӱҵ Makes Music for BBC Music Day

ºù«Ӱҵ will be alive with the sound of music for the return of ºù«Ӱҵ Makes Music, a celebration of local and established talent in collaboration with BBC Music Day.

Taking place the weekend of Friday 9 - Sunday 11 June, 1,000 musicians will be performing at various locations around the city in established venues and unexpected spaces to create magical moments.

Events on Friday 9 June feature everything from Opera to Omnichord solos, Hip Hop to Harmonicas, Folk to Fanfare, and Brass to Beethoven.

ºù«Ӱҵ published a report last year which outlined the city’s booming music sector and how ºù«Ӱҵ is well-positioned to be the UK's leading music city.

Most events take place on Friday 9 June with highlights including the University of ºù«Ӱҵ’s Indian Music Ensemble performing a Raga for commuters at ºù«Ӱҵ Train Station at 8am, and Concord Allstars Marching Band who take over the Moor for a Tea Time Parade at 6pm. Also on the Moor, you can bop while you shop at the Moor Market’s Silent Disco.

Barker’s Pool plays host to the Yellow Bus stage with a variety of the city’s best talent on show and Tenor Gareth Lloyd will perform an operatic aria on the Town Hall Balcony at 12.45pm.

On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 June, the newly renovated Nonconformist Chapel at ºù«Ӱҵ General Cemetery will host its first ever music event, Lush Spectra.

Curated by ºù«Ӱҵ-based, internationally-renowned electronic artist Mark Fell, Lush Spectra will see the chapel beautifully illuminated as it comes alive with a series of multichannel audio works and acoustic music.

The weekend will bring together some of the world's most renowned experimental musicians and composers to create a mesmerising journey into the night – with Saturday night's programme continuing until sunrise.

ºù«Ӱҵ Makes Music is delivered by the University of ºù«Ӱҵ supported by ºù«Ӱҵ BID.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ, said: "ºù«Ӱҵ is a great music city - from the musicians to the bookers and promoters to the audiences. This weekend showcases our musical talent, our wonderful city, and our international venues celebrating the city and music together."
