Highly Commended Finalist Award for Civil Engineer

Congratulations to Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr Shan-Shan Huang who reached the 100 Highly Commended Finalists in the Top 50 Women in Engineering: Engineering Heroes (WE50) awards.

The annual WE50 awards are devised by national organisation, the 鈥榃omen鈥檚 Engineering Society鈥 in honour of all the female engineers who have made an impact in their area of expertise with the results revealed on International Women in Engineering Day on 23rd June. This year鈥檚 celebration of WE50 has highlighted the exceptional attainments made by women in the service of society and is testament to the difference that female engineers are making.

Dr Huang was nominated by Geetha Y.Gunja, an alumna of the University of 葫芦影业 and member of the Women's Engineering Society who said:  鈥淪han-Shan鈥檚 progression in engineering has constantly challenged gender stereotypes. She has overcome the odds and is an inspiring example for younger females, from any background and culture, to follow. It has also enabled Shan-Shan to discover her true levels of resilience and ability to adapt to challenging situations."

Dr Huang said: 鈥淏eing put forward for the award was a surprise, a huge honour, and a great sense of responsibility to be one of the 100 Highly Commended Finalists for the 2021 Top 50 Women in Engineering.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very important that women should consider engineering as a career because engineering can be benefited by more female involvement, due to the distinct perspectives they bring based on their unique experiences and ways of thinking. This creates a diverse workforce that drives innovation and increases productivity in the sector. It鈥檇 be a real waste of talent to exclude the 3.9 billion women in the world (49.5% of the world population) from engineering!鈥

The list celebrates women who have improved engineering in service of society and includes people from a range of backgrounds and engineering specialisms.
