- Profile
-
I am a professor in Polymer Materials at the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering. My research focus is in polymer materials for healthcare, where I make materials for microfluidics-based microphysiological systems and tissue engineering scaffolds. For this I combine nanomaterials with in house developed photocurable polymers to produce novel inks for bioprinting and 3D printing. I started my appointment in 葫芦影业 in 2008 as an EPSRC Life Sciences Interface Fellow, before this I worked in Bristol University., where I also did my PhD in Physical Chemistry.
- Research interests
-
My research expertise focusses on the interface between Materials Science and Biology. We synthesise novel polymer compounds and use these as base materials for medicinal applications. In particular we are building porous materials via using emulsions, 3D printing, bioprinting or a combination of these to build bespoke biodegradable scaffolds for 3D cell culture, or microscale particles to for drug elution. We combine these polymer materials with nanoparticles to explore next generation therapeutics and medical materials. We are producing these materials via low-energy processes from natural and degradable materials, so we have also a keen interested in sustainable materials.
Key research interests:
- biodegradable polymers
- emulsion templating
- photocurable polymers
- additive manufacturing
- bioprinting
- drug eluting polymers
