- Profile
-
After an Undergraduate degree and PhD in the field of Materials Science and Engineering, I worked as a researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2008, I returned to the UK, and came to ºù«Ӱҵ for the first time, as a Lecturer, where I have remained ever since. Over that time, my research interests have developed from initially porous metals and lattice structures, and mechanical characterisation, to include more of the fundamental formation of alloys, and the characterisation of microstructure and phases.
In 2019, I received the Sir Colin Humphreys Education Award by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3). This award recognises Russell's contribution to enhancing students' scientific/technological literacy through the teaching or support of materials, minerals or mining topics within 11-19 learning, either in the secondary or further education sectors.
- Research interests

At the most fundamental level, I am interested in how different elements come together and form alloys. I find this exciting because there are so many possible combinations of different elements in different amounts, that the chances of there being undiscovered alloys with better properties than the materials we know about are in many cases high. We know a lot about some specific alloy types, but my research aims to improve our ability to predict the useful alloys that could form from untried combinations, involving less common elements. Applications include fusion energy and advanced joining.
Key research interests:
- Alloy Development
- Multicomponent Alloys / High Entropy Alloys
- Alloys for Fusion Energy
- Brazing and Soldering
- Mechanical Properties and Nanoindentation

I teach materials modules in a number of different courses, including:
- Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering (General Engineering)
- Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Phase Diagrams (Materials Science and Engineering)
- Materials Outreach (Materials Science and Engineering)
- Leadership and Research Skills (Fusion Power CDT)
I also supervise final year undergraduate and Masters projects across several engineering programmes.
