Background

The optimisation of advanced manufacturing processes and accelerated materials exploration requires predictive modelling and simulation capabilities of material behaviour.  This is a challenging task since material physics covers a wide range of spatial and temporal scales and requires a multiscale materials modelling paradigm to solve industrial challenges. Multiscale modelling capabilities are not readily available for industrial applications, with existing software often lacking this essential feature.

Solution

The M2i2 web-based computational platform addresses this challenge by providing access to high-fidelity computational models of material microstructures and properties that are integrated into process models. This opens up exciting opportunities to optimise industrial processes using robust material behaviour models. Furthermore, it allows for the development of tailored AI capabilities based on multiscale models, ultimately empowering edge computing to support the Industry 4.0 and Materials 4.0 initiatives.

The platform can reconstruct intricate 3D microstructures and predict location-specific properties through both standalone simulations and the use of integrated in-situ sensor data.
