Engineering Heartspace
The Engineering Heartspace project is the creation of a quadruple height atrium between the Grade II listed Sir Frederick Mappin Building and the 1885 Central Wing housing new laboratories, offices and social space and the complete refurbishment of both buildings.
Overview
The atrium is housed under an impressive curved glass roof that links the two buildings. An alternative entrance to both the Mappin and Central Block buildings has been created from Portobello Street. The project is designed to aid communication and collaboration.
The Engineering Heartspace has created a dynamic social and research collaboration space between the two oldest buildings in the University estate.

Mappin Street closed from 20-27 January 2020
Mappin Street is closed between these dates for the removal of the Interserve cabins. This restricts access to Mappin Street car park from Broad Lane.
Portobello Street closed from 4 January - 1 March 2020
A section of Portobello Street will be closed to vehicles from Saturday 4 January until Sunday 1 March 2020. This is due to a number of construction projects in this area and road resurfacing by Amey on behalf of ºù«Ӱҵ City Council.
Construction vehicles from all sites will be accessing Portobello Street from Mappin St to the Amy Johnson Building. Delivery access to Abney Street will be maintained via the same route.
Portobello Street will be closed from the junction of Mappin Street to Rockingham Street in sections but pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be able to use the footpath.
