I use reading and writing skills all the time in my work - in many ways I felt more prepared for the world of work than my friends in STEM subjects
What are your main responsibilities?
Writing press releases about what the NSPCC does and engaging broadcast media like BBC South East and ITV London in our work.
What other jobs have you had since graduating?
I was a Junior Reporter for the Eastern Daily Press for a while, before realising I really wanted to be in the charity sector. When I first graduated I worked as a carer for a year, and I'm so glad I did it!
How has your degree from the School of English and your time at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ helped you in your career?
I use my reading and writing skills all the time in my work - in many ways I actually felt more prepared for the world of work than my friends in STEM subjects! Being able to craft a good paragraph, read texts critically, and skim reading are very valuable assets. Also the empathy you cultivate from the study of literature is really important in charity work.
What is your greatest achievement to date?
I am actually still most proud of my First Class Degree! But I am also incredibly proud of everything I've done to highlight child protection with the NSPCC.
What career advice would you give to a student interested in studying English?
Don't underestimate the power and flexibility of English as a degree. But also don't be afraid to diversify when you graduate. A mixed portfolio of skills is really important these days. I did an NCTJ diploma which was really key to my career path.
