Description

We are pleased to announce that Professor Thomas Siegmund from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University will give an online talk on 'Bone fracture: some insights into trabecular and cortical bone' on Wednesday 14 June 2023.

Abstract:

Bone fracture can be debilitating and lead to a significant reduction of quality of live in the aging population. At the same time, the understanding of the fracture behavior of a fully remodeled human bone tissue is complex. Given the inherent complexities of dealing with a human tissue, there continues to be gaps in the knowledge on bone fracture. In this talk I will discuss my research groups work on cracks and fracture in both trabecular and cortical bone. For trabecular bone I will address the mechanics of the formation of linear microcracks. I will demonstrate the importance of tissue anisotropy and heterogeneity on the stress state and the damage evolution in trabecular bone. For cortical bone I will address the question of fracture toughness with the objective to measure a specimen size independent tissue toughness.

This work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Awards 1643164 and 1952993.
