Description

We are pleased to announce that our next mechanobiology seminar is being hosted jointly with the MCB group.  Dr Liam Holt from the Institute for Systems Genetics at New York University will give a talk on 'Crowding, compression and cancer' on Friday 3 February, 12:00 - 13:00.

Abstract:

Cells within tumors are under compressive stress. We find that compression drives nuclear ruptures and mitotic errors. Long-term growth under compression leads to specific genome alterations and mechanoadaptation. We propose that this evolution is crucial for cancer progression and may present opportunities to design new therapeutic approaches.

Short Bio:

Liam Holt completed his Ph. D. at UCSF, was a Bowes Fellow at UC Berkeley, and is currently Associate Professor at New York University. His lab studies how mechanical compression affects cells, and how the physical properties of the cell interior affect biochemistry in both normal biology and disease. He cofounded Science Sketches (www.sciencesketches.org), an online dictionary of science videos now partnered with the Explorer’s Guide to Biology and MBoC Journal; and Inspire Science, a symposium about maintaining happiness in a challenging career.
