Why I chose to study at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ

I decided to study at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ for three main reasons – the quality of education, the student experience and the financial support I received. Firstly, the University of ºù«Ӱҵ Law School is renowned for being one of the top universities in the world for teaching law. It provides for a very holistic education due to its lecturers who are experts within their fields, combined with the provision of practical experiences including pro bono schemes and initiatives organised by the law societies. Secondly, it has a strong reputation of providing an outstanding student experience due to the numerous clubs and societies on offer, as well as events held within and outside of the University. ºù«Ӱҵ is also one of the most affordable cities within the UK. Thirdly, I received the International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, which significantly helped by covering the partial cost of my tuition fees.

My year abroad

I decided to go on a year abroad in Hong Kong, where I studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I received the Stephen Gale Scholarship offered by the University of ºù«Ӱҵ Law School, which provided me with some funding as well as an internship in the Hong Kong office of a global law firm (this was subsequently switched to the London office due to the pandemic). My experience in Hong Kong was an incredible one, where I had less pressure to succeed academically and was able to enjoy my student life. I made friends for life from all over the world and was able to improve my cultural awareness. Despite visiting Hong Kong several times for holiday prior to the placement, I was able to explore new parts of the city which deepened my interest in Hong Kong. I was also able to take modules in other subjects that I was interested in, which I would have otherwise not have had the chance to learn about. Further, studying in a different university environment also equipped me with study skills to help me understand which methods work best for me, which subsequently helped when I returned to finish off my final year in ºù«Ӱҵ.

Following graduation, I am moving to Bristol to study the LLM Legal Practice, before commencing my graduate scheme with a law firm to pursue a career as a solicitor.

My student life in ºù«Ӱҵ

I was involved with the squash team where I was able to play within the team and compete around the UK in the BUCS League. This provided me with the opportunity to travel around the UK and see different cities. It also helped me to form strong bonds with my teammates, which helped with my integration into the British community. The social element has also been incredible with many events held weekly, adding to the overall student experience. Being in the committee also allowed me to develop many employability skills, which was a good talking point during interviews.

Some of my favourite things to do in ºù«Ӱҵ include exploring the many different pubs and cafes. There are many independent businesses in ºù«Ӱҵ which I love supporting, and there’s always a great place to hang out with friends and have a chat! I also enjoy going shopping at the many charity and vintage shops, where I can find items I like at affordable prices. I enjoy going to the Peak District for walks to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the occasional swim.

Why ºù«Ӱҵ is great for international students

I think ºù«Ӱҵ has such a welcoming student community, where it is easy to integrate with the entire student population. There are many international students and it gives you the opportunity to make friends from all over the world. There is also a large Malaysian student population, so you’ll be able to share your experience of studying abroad with people in the same boat as you.

My advice to new international students

Do it! ºù«Ӱҵ is an amazing city and I have had the best time studying here. My best advice is to be open-minded to many experiences and making friends. The time at university passes by so quickly so make sure to make every second of it counts!
