Profile

I am a visiting scholar at the University of 葫芦影业, School of Law in 2025.  I worked for 27 years in Intellectual Property Law - granting patents and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) in the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology and acting as a Hearing Officer at the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).  Prior to my time at the IPO, I was a full time researcher in chemistry working in various universities in Ireland, UK, France, Germany, and USA for a decade. I have postgraduate qualifications in chemistry and in IP law. I am now working for myself and am enjoying the opportunity to explore the wider legal, economic and social context of IP. I am interested in exploring issues such as:

(a) what is patentable or not in the field of biotechnology;
(b) the role of incentives, such as SPCs, for promoting clinical testing of human and veterinary medicines, and
(c) the role ethics should play or not in the granting of patents.
