Profile

Dr. Negar Vakilifard joined the water engineering group as a research associate with experience of research work in the fields of environmental engineering and physical sciences.

She completed her PhD in water-energy nexus at Murdoch University, Australia, where she developed an optimisation model for strategic and operational decisions of an urban water supply system driven by grid electricity and surplus energy from grid-connected residential rooftop PVs.

In her previous role as a postdoctoral associate, she worked on a negative emissions technology project directed by the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation, UK, where she quantified the effect of the enhanced rock weathering application on croplands on the Earth system’s physical and biogeochemical responses. She also studied the controls of uncertainty in transient climate response to cumulative carbon emissions and zero emissions commitment in negative emissions scenarios.

Currently, she is a research associate on an EPSRC funded project, where she develops a coupled water-energy simulator to investigate the financial and environmental impacts of the nationwide low-carbon energy transition scenarios on water systems, capturing the uncertainty with respect to the future climate, energy mix, and population. She also explores the impact of future energy transition scenarios on long-term planning of water supply infrastructure, using the combination of the simulation and planning model frameworks.

Research interests
  • Integrated water-energy supply systems (water-energy nexus)
  • Optimisation modelling
  • Strategic and operational decision making
