Megan has strived to gain a portfolio of professional experience during her time at ºù«Ӱҵ, whilst demonstrating her enthusiasm and ability to help others.

Commercially aware

Megan undertook a placement year in Dunelm’s Social Media and PR team, where she helped to manage their new partnership with Macmillan Cancer Care. As well as arranging an Easter egg donation and doing a sponsored hike for Macmillan, she helped to boost Dunelm’s Instagram following by 135% over the year.  

She also managed social media for a local beautician Xodos Beauty and held a part-time job at The Walkley Cottage pub, where she developed problem-solving capabilities and was trusted to lead shifts without managerial supervision.  Additionally, she completed work experience in the Head Office of Specsavers, understanding how the different business functions work and supporting marketing to increase footfall.  

Becoming a leader

As a Futures First Ambassador Megan shared her own placement experience with students who were considering a placement year. She also took part in a London-based networking event to meet Management School alumni and students currently on their placements.

She carried out the roles of Social Secretary and then Secretary of the Management Society, gaining experience in running events, negotiating with sponsors, and communicating effectively with society members.  As a member of the University’s Intramural Netball Team, Megan took the role of Vice Captain in her second year, improving both her teamwork and leadership skills.

Sharing her journey

Megan has used own personal journey to inspire others. She has volunteered with the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) by supporting the organisation of their Christmas party, giving feedback to health bodies at the Patient Voice Forum, and sharing her story with year six students to help them with their secondary school transition days.

Next for Megan

After gaining valuable exposure to the world of work, Megan was offered a place on the Graduate Management Training Scheme with National Express.
