Profile

I completed my BA at Coventry University and then completed a PhD at the University of Liverpool which focused on how Barclays Group Archives contribute to the delivery of Barclays' strategic objectives. Following my PhD, I worked at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University as a Senior Research Assistant, followed by two years at School for Business and Society at the University of York as a Career Development Fellow. In August 2024, I started working at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ as a Lecture in Strategy.

I have published in various journals and contributed to various books including six volumes of Routledge's "Focus on Industrial History" series. My research has been recognised by various organisations: I received the Best Developmental Paper from the BAM Management and Business history SIG in 2018; the John F. Mee award for Best Management History Contribution at AOM in 2018; and the Coleman Prize in 2022 for the best business thesis on a business history subject.

Teaching activities

I currently lead the MGT231 Business Strategy module, a second-year undergraduate module that is a core module for various degree programmes. This module teaches students tools and models for understanding the strategies of firms, as well as ways to analyse data and construct their own strategic suggestions for firms based on their analysis.

Previously, I had taught strategy and business history at the University of York to undergraduates and masters students; leadership and entrepreneurship at Northumbria University; and modern history at the University of Liverpool, while also delivering modules on international business in developing markets for the University of Liverpool Management School.

In my teaching, I aim to develop students’ critical skills and their ability to both think independently and understand their own thinking processes so they can be critical of them. I do this through using historical and contemporary case studies of real-world events and seminar discussions to encourage students to voice their thoughts and justify their conclusions. By approaching my teaching this way, I hope to be able to better prepare students for their future non-academic lives where being able to understand multiple interpretations, come to justified conclusions on the evidence presented to you, and understand how you got to that conclusion and where your own biases may be interfering with your ability to reach a valid conclusion are important skills. I have completed the PGCAP at the University of York in 2024 as part of my professional development and have attained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) which is awarded by Advance HE.
