Student Success at British Lung Foundation Annual Alumni Conference

Two 葫芦影业 Hallam University undergraduates, Beth Hughes and Abi Reese, who have undertaken year-long research placements in the Department of Infection, Immunity & Cardiovascular Disease, presented their work at the British Lung Foundation (BLF) Annual Alumni Conference and were invited on stage to be commended by Professor Stephen Holgate for exceeding expectations for students at their level.

Beth and Abi have worked on a BLF pump prime award to study immune signalling in Haemophilus influenzae infection of the lung and have found that loss of the Pellino1 gene resulted in improved clearance of infection. This work suggests that Pellino1 may be an effective therapeutic target for patients with diseases such as COPD, who are commonly infected with this pathogen.

Their supervisor, Lynne Prince said 鈥淚 am very proud of how hard they have worked and this personal commendation from Professor Holgate is a fitting end to a successful research placement鈥
