Profile

I recently completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Practice and currently work as a DERA research fellow. I am based clinically as a GP in Darnall. I am deputy lead of the Deep End Research Alliance (DERA) and have been involved in its strategic development since 2022.

My work focuses on racial equity in health and co-developing community driven interventions to address structural racism within healthcare. Over the past 5 years, my research has centred on dementia equity and examined socio-cultural

influences impacting access and uptake of services. This interest evolved through priority-setting discussions with communities on issues they felt most impactful. I am currently principal investigator of Putting Me into Memory Services (): a co-produced study exploring dementia & ethnicity with ethnic minority communities, seeking to improve access and uptake of dementia services. This work has been co-led by community voices through trusting and reciprocal relationships with underserved communities.

I am passionate about championing inclusive research design and participatory research methodologies so that power in research is shifted towards the public. Our innovative work at the Deep End Research Alliance (DERA) to develop and refine the role of community research link worker (CRLWs) in primary care research has led to profound improvements in impact and research recruitment in underserved populations.  This has involved developing and delivering a CRLW training programme for a wide range of community members.

Previously, I worked with public health research teams in Jamaica (University of the West Indies) giving valuable insight into Caribbean culture and advocating for underserved populations. I worked as a research assistant on studies exploring dementia care in the Caribbean, the intersection of faith and mental health in Caribbean communities and a realist evaluation of a complex intervention to address non-communicable diseases.

I am an experienced facilitator of PPIE events. I work in mixed-methods using participatory research principles. I am a member of the cross-faculty participatory research network committee at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ and the Healthy Lifespan Institute Inequality and Intersectionality workstream.

Research interests

My research interests centre around racial equity and health justice. I focus on understanding the deeply rooted influences of racial disparities in health and co-developing interventions to tackle structural racism currently built into services.

I am passionate about participatory research and co-production and employ mixed-methods. Led by collaborations with community partners and extensive public involvement and engagement, I have developed a specific focus on racial equity in brain health and dementia outcomes.

Driven by my clinical work as a GP in Darnall, I am a committed member of the Deep End Research Alliance which works in collaboration with practitioners and communities to deliver research which benefits primary care patients in deprived settings.
