Profile

Tarun K George is a physician specialising in internal medicine and a health economist with training and experience in diverse global settings. He completed his clinical training at Christian Medical College, Vellore, where he continues to serve as faculty in the Department of General Medicine.  His Master of Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine provided a strong foundation in public health principles.  Further training in global health economics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health equipped him with a robust understanding of economic fundamentals and essential skills in economic evaluation.

He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ, where he is developing a health system-based economic model to assess health and social care resource utilisation among older adults in the UK.  He has developed numerous Excel-based models throughout his training, and his project on the economic evaluation of COVID-19 therapeutics in India has directly supported decision-making in his institution.  He has also published several cost-of-illness studies and econometric analyses.

Research interests

Tarun K George is working on a PhD titled "Thecosystem - A conceptual model for system-wide older people’s care in the UK and a framework for decision modelling."

With a high proportion of older people in the UK and rising healthcare costs, it's crucial to make holistic decisions that incorporate all the costs and resources used in various healthcare sectors (such as GP care, hospitalisation and social services). This project seeks to develop a tool, which is a software-based model, that can compare different population-based programs and generate their relative costs and healthcare benefits. This may help decision makers prioritise which programs to adopt and can provide a foundation for system-wide health economic studies in the UK.

He is currently a principal investigator involved in the following research projects in India:

  • Assessing the cost-effectiveness of COVID therapeutics for India.
  • A multi-centre private project to assess healthcare utilization and financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in India (HU-COV).
Professional activities and memberships

n his clinical role, Tarun is a faculty of General Medicine, involved in the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates. He is an examiner for MRCP PACES in India.

He is an adjunct faculty at CMC Vellore’s Centre for Public Health and provides guidance and insights to health economic projects and initiatives.
