Why did you choose to pursue an MSc in Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies? 

I have always been passionate about genetics and intrigued by the way genes influence human behavior, health, and disease. My interest in personalised medicine drove me to seek a master鈥檚 program that would allow me to explore this field in depth. When I discovered the MSc in Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies at the University of 葫芦影业, I was drawn to its cutting-edge curriculum, hands-on research opportunities, and strong industry connections. This programme was the perfect fit for developing my expertise and preparing for a career in advanced therapies.

What have you enjoyed most about the MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies course?

What I enjoyed most about the MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapies course was its unique assessment structure. It challenged me to think creatively, much like a principal investigator, as I developed innovative therapeutic solutions for rare diseases. Strategising every aspect of a new treatment鈥攆rom concept to potential implementation鈥攚as both intellectually stimulating and highly rewarding. This experience not only pushed my creative boundaries but also provided invaluable preparation for real-world challenges in advanced therapies.

Have there been any particular modules or topics that you found especially interesting or valuable?

The 鈥淐linical Development in Cell and Gene Therapy鈥 module was particularly valuable. It provided a comprehensive understanding of the entire process of developing a therapy from scratch, including the regulatory requirements. A highlight of this module was the opportunity to interact with industry professionals actively working on therapeutic solutions. Hearing their firsthand experiences and insights into real-world challenges made the learning experience both engaging and highly relevant to future career opportunities.

What kind of practical or laboratory experience have you gained during the course?

During the course, I gained extensive practical laboratory experience through a 20-week research project titled 鈥淪afety and Efficacy of SRSF1-based Gene Therapeutics in a Mouse Model of C9orf72-ALS/FTD,鈥 supervised by Dr. Guillaume Hautbergue. This project involved working directly with C9orf72 mouse models, allowing me to develop proficiency in a range of molecular biology techniques鈥攊ncluding quantitative PCR, ELISA, DNA/RNA extraction, immunofluorescence staining, imaging, and mouse dissection. Additionally, I enhanced my skills in statistical analysis and became well-versed in both Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Documentation Practices, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application in advanced cell and gene therapies.

How has the support from academic staff and university resources helped you during your studies?

The support from academic staff and university resources has been instrumental in shaping my career, especially as an international student. The team at SITraN provided invaluable guidance, helping me navigate key decisions throughout my studies. In particular, my mentors, Dr. Guillaume Hautbergue and Dr. Julie Simpson, played a significant role in my professional development, ultimately helping me secure my current job. Their mentorship, along with the university鈥檚 resources, created an environment where I could grow both academically and professionally.

How do you think this course has prepared you for your future career?

This course has provided a strong foundation for my career by reinforcing my core principles in advanced therapies. The 20-week research project offered a hands-on experience that closely mirrored real-world challenges, allowing me to apply my knowledge in a practical setting. Additionally, the opportunity to engage with industry professionals gave me valuable insights into the expectations and realities of the field, helping me feel well-prepared for the next steps in my career.

My advice to future students considering this MSc is to fully embrace the experience. This course offers a unique opportunity to interact with industry leaders and leading researchers, providing valuable insights into the field of advanced therapies.
