Profile

Jonathan joined the department in October 2023, following completion of his PhD at The University of Manchester. His research explores the role that technology plays in people’s lives, with particular focus on young people and families, disadvantage, identity and agency. His work is multidisciplinary, contributing to academic discourse in areas of youth studies, education, digital-cultural studies and digital sociology. He uses creative, participatory methods, to draw qualitative, contextual insight. Jonathan’s research and interests take influence from his varied background, which includes a master’s degree in creative writing and many years’ work experience, including roles in the creative digital industries, and senior management and leadership positions in HE.

Jonathan has taught and supervised at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with extensive experience of supporting students pastorally and academically. He is currently finalising journal publications on the mediating role that technology plays in young people’s lives and a contribution to the digital divide discourse, using a theoretical approach based on individual fulfilment and agency.
