Description

This online taster session will give you an insight into what it's like to study East Asian studies at university. You'll have the chance to hear from our East Asian studies academics, participate in a taster lecture and engage with current undergraduates.

The Rise of Hallyu: Imitation, Adaptation or Reinvention?

This talk will look at the remarkable growth of Korean new wave popular culture (known as 'Hallyu') across the late 20th and early 21st centuries. By looking more closely at the Korean television, film and music industries, we will consider how Hallyu is situated within the broader development of East Asian mass culture.

Through close analysis of comparative textual examples, this talk also addresses the often contentious parallels made between the hybridised aspects of Hallyu and other cultural texts from both the East and West.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.
