Description

This online taster session will give you a feel for what it's like to study Spanish at university.

Visions of Havana on Instagram

Havana is often thought of as a place "frozen in time" and the sort of place people wish to see "before it changes".

But what do we base this expectation on?

This lecture explores how Instagram is an important way that outsiders imagine and experience the city.

Instagram photos draw on and add to a nostalgic vision of an exotic, underdeveloped Havana - further enabled by the platform's features to ‘age’ photos and highlight specific textures and colours.

However, with the majority of images created and circulated by tourists rather than the city's residents (due to a relative lack of access to digital technologies in Cuba) the resulting vision is somewhat lopsided.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.

The mini lecture was a great insight into what learning at university would actually look like and the kind of topics you cover, which was quite a unique and a really useful experience
