Ameena's academic qualifications include BA hons in English Studies, PGCE Teaching, MSc Leadership and Management and MA Islamic Studies.

Ustadha has been active in the community since 1994 having studied under various shayukh including Sh Faisal Manjoo and Prof Ataullah Siddiqui.

Currently, as well as being the Muslim Chaplain for ºù«Ӱҵ University, she is an Islamic Studies BA lecturer for Markfield Institute of Higher Education (UK) and Director of a UK refuge project.

Previous roles: Deputy Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, committee member of Mosque leadership boards, school leader and education consultant.

Ustadha gives public lectures in the UK, internationally and online. Topics include Islam in contemporary society, dawah, new Muslims, Tazkiyah, Seerah.


Muslim Associate Chaplain

Imam Sheikh Mohammad Ismail DL

Imam Sheikh Mohammad Ismail DL is a prominent British Muslim scholar from ºù«Ӱҵ. He worked as a school inspector, education and safeguarding consultant. He served the community as a Lead Imam, teacher and lecturer for more than 40 years.

Previously he served in HMS as prison chaplain in 1980s. He supported and shared coordination in the NIACE national faith leaders’ training programme in the North which helped in the integration of different faith communities.

After studying Islamic theology, Arabic and Eastern languages, he joined ºù«Ӱҵ Hallam (Polytechnic) and ºù«Ӱҵ University to study and conduct research in education. He was a lecturer for 10 years in social and community education in Rotherham College of Arts. 

On 1 of September 2017, Imam Ismail was appointed By Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant as Deputy Lieutenant for The County of South Yorkshire.

He is very actively involved in multi-faith work and with different Muslim theological groups nationally, internationally and locally for more than 40 years. Through his position as a Lead Imam, and through his work in education, he is effectively promoting community cohesion.

Mr Ismail DL conducted training and lectures on Cultural Awareness and community cohesion in Northern Residential College Barnsley for 4 years. In South Yorkshire where he lives, he served the United Mosque council for a very long time.

At present, he is the executive board member of ºù«Ӱҵ Federation of Mosques. He is a patron of St Luke's Hospice and other charities in ºù«Ӱҵ. He is an active member of Muslim Jewish Leaders Council MJLC in Vienna.

Nationally he is a member of The National Council of Imams and Rabbis and was an executive member of UK Interfaith Network. Locally he is a member of ºù«Ӱҵ faith leaders group.

He is presently the Muslim chaplain at ºù«Ӱҵ and a member of ºù«Ӱҵ Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies.

Prayer rooms

The Muslim Welfare House of ºù«Ӱҵ

The Mosque is located at 10-12 Severn Road, Broomhill.

Friday prayers take place at 12.45pm in winter and 1.10pm in summer. In addition, there are a range of activities for everyone. Visit  for more information.

University prayer rooms

The University has prayer room facilities for brothers and sisters, with Wudu facilities nearby. All prayer rooms are available for men and women.

  • The Students' Union: Prayer Room located on Level 2. Wudu facilities are available inside the rooms.
  • Information Commons: Level 4, Room E49 (Sisters), Room E48 (Brothers).  Wudu facilities nearby.
  • The Diamond: Level C.  Wudu facilities nearby.
  • George Porter building (temporary facilities): Located on Level 2. Wudu facilities nearby.
  • AMRC Training Centre: Lower Ground Floor.  Multifaith prayer room
  • Firth Court: No Wudu facility nearby. (Temporarily closed due to maintenance)
  • 38 Mappin Street: Level A, Basement Floor.  Closed during exam time. Accessible only with a Ucard.
  • Northumberland Road: Located in the Modular Building
  • The Wave: Located just behind the reception desk (floor A).  Wudu facilities are available inside the rooms.
  • Royal Hallamshire Hospital: B Floor (Muslim Prayer Room), A Floor, (Multifaith Room inside Chapel). 

There are also prayer rooms in all of the hospitals.

Some University buildings may have restricted public access. Before you set off, you should check with the person or department organising your visit whether you will be able to access these facilities. If you require further information about spaces in the or the , contact these spaces directly.

Muslim student societies

For many Muslim students, the Students' Union student society is an important social and religious focus.

International scholarships

We offer a generous package of financial support for international students, including undergraduate and postgraduate taught scholarships worth £10,000 towards the annual tuition fee.

Applications are open for existing offer holders for programmes starting in autumn 2025.
