The ins and outs of my course
I chose this course because of my passion for working in the field of artificial intelligence, as it is a tool that I believe can bring progress and innovation comparable to that brought on by the advent of the Internet.
The modules, in particular, have been very useful in allowing me to understand the principles of Computer Science. An example of this is 'Introduction to Algorithms and Data Structures' and 'Foundations of Computer Science', which have provided me with a solid foundation in computational logic, algorithms, and the mathematical side of computing.
Furthermore, the 'Machines and Intelligence' module has introduced me to core AI concepts and programming for research. Currently, in modules such as 'Data-Driven Computing', I am learning machine learning principles and data analysis using Python, which are directly relevant to my career goals and will enable me to develop meaningful AI-driven solutions to real-world issues.
The best parts of my course so far
I have enjoyed the combination of theory and application most! Lots of modules have a component where you test your knowledge and create a complex project, which allows you to both improve your skills and serves as an example of them for future employers.
Studying Computer Science at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ has allowed me to build a solid technical foundation while also gaining work experience, which is invaluable for future employment. However, what I value most is the incredible array of opportunities it provides in the form of professors who you can ask for advice, access to cutting-edge study resources, and a school full of people who are passionate, supportive, and driven to inspire innovation.
One of the most rewarding experiences during my course so far has been the Global Engineering Challenge (GEC) module - a week-long, cross-disciplinary project that allowed me to apply my technical skills and collaborate with other students to solve a real-world engineering problem. What made this module especially fun was the opportunity to work with students from various engineering disciplines, with each bringing unique perspectives to our solution and being able to think in ways that the rest of the team could not.
Why I chose ºù«Ӱҵ
What initially drew me to the University of ºù«Ӱҵ was its many research groups and initiatives dedicated to advancing the field of AI and machine learning, such as the ºù«Ӱҵ Machine Learning Network, , and the Centre for Machine Intelligence. Additionally, the high student satisfaction scores, a significant student population, and the fact that ºù«Ӱҵ had the best-rated Students' Union in the country were major factors in my decision to study here.
The city of ºù«Ӱҵ itself is a vibrant place full of hidden gems and lovely people, and I was surprised by how quickly it felt like home. As an avid climber and cyclist, I also love the outdoors scene in ºù«Ӱҵ, with the Peak District being the perfect canvas for bouldering and the hills making sure that everyday is leg day!
However, the thing that stands out about ºù«Ӱҵ for me is the strong sense of hospitality I've felt from everyone, whether it be on a night out, a climbing trip, or just studying in the library. You never feel like a stranger, and that quality is one that really allows you to grow as a person.
Student support, joining societies, and… hackathons
In my first year, I undertook an Arabic Language module alongside my regular modules, courtesy of the university's Modern Languages Teaching Centre (MLTC). Having the opportunity to not only receive top-quality language learning, but also being accredited for it was a fantastic way to enhance my academic experience and develop valuable skills beyond my curriculum.
I am involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities such as student societies, volunteering projects, and hackathons. Some examples of my roles include being the Brain-Computer Interface Lead for ºù«Ӱҵ Bionics and Chair of ºù«Ӱҵ Volunteering.
What I enjoy most about these activities is the opportunity to grow professionally and connect with a wide range of people, which allows me to learn about different cultures, expand my social circle, and develop my skills.
For instance, hackathons allow me to refine my technical abilities and practice solving problems under pressure, while volunteering provides a chance to give back to the community and allows for a break from intensive studying.
Life after graduation
I plan to pursue graduate studies, such as a master’s degree or further, to expand my expertise and contribute to research in my field. Following this, I hope to build a career in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, focusing on developing innovative real-world solutions in areas like sustainability and automation. But ultimately, while these are my current goals, I'm open to exploring new opportunities and prepared to embrace whatever comes my way.
