Steph Cotton (BA Economics)
Why did you choose to study BA Economics at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ?
Economics was my favourite subject at A-Level. I chose ºù«Ӱҵ because it was a nice, compact city with a good 'vibe' for students, and was also close to lovely countryside (the Peak District).
What was your favourite part of studying at the university?
The wide variety of modules available. For example, I studied a module on Behavioural Economics which involved understanding why people make economically irrational decisions which was very interesting. The main thing that surprised me was how many situations and aspects of our lives that economics is relevant to.
How did your time at the university shape your career path?
I gain a lot of transferable skills (mainly mathematical, problem solving, time management and analytical) and an understanding of the economic environment that businesses have to operate in.
What career advice would you give future and current Economics students?
Gain work experience during your degree; it could lead to a future opportunity but if not if gives you something concrete for your CV and to mention in interviews. Get involved with societies (particularly in an organisational role) for this reason as well.
