MA in Urban Design and Planning alumni Swati talks about the practical, studio-based nature of the course and why ºù«Ӱҵ is a great place to study for international students and aspiring urban designers/planners.

Why did you choose to study this course at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ?

Choosing the University of ºù«Ӱҵ was not a hard choice. The program's intensive one-year curriculum, studio teaching, and the university's stellar reputation in planning education, as consistently recognized by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), made it an ideal fit. Plus, being close to the Peak District played a compelling role in my decision, offering a serene balance between urban life and natural landscapes. The Student Union, acclaimed as the best in the UK, offers numerous extracurricular activities that enrich students' development beyond the classroom. Additionally, the university’s proactive approach to career development is evident through its careers team and support with regular career fair days that provide invaluable networking opportunities with industry-leading companies.

What are your favourite parts of the course so far?

My academic journey at the University of ºù«Ӱҵ has been both enriching and dynamic. Modules such as Planning Place and Design Studio, Masterplanning Studio, Perspectives on Urban Planning and Development, and The Urban Climate Emergency have stood out as particularly engaging and interactive. These modules not only fostered educational growth but also encouraged meaningful connections with both fellow students and professors. 

What do you want to do after you finish your course?

After graduation, I aspire to delve deeper into planning and sustainability. My aim is to contribute meaningfully to urban development initiatives that prioritise environmental consciousness and community well-being, focusing on people-centred planning approaches.

How do you think your course will prepare you for a job in the future?

The MA program isn’t just theory, it’s applied, hands-on and practical. I’ve gained crucial software skills and a holistic understanding of the entire design and planning process through studio modules. The university's mentorship program has provided invaluable opportunities to learn from seasoned professionals, enhancing my understanding of real-world planning dynamics. Through hands-on experiences and industry-relevant coursework, I am confident in my ability to navigate complex planning challenges. 

What skills do you think you have learned from the course/uni experience which will help you in the future?

The program has honed my analytical skills, deepened my understanding of the design process, and equipped me with the skills to craft comprehensive development appraisal reports, providing me with a holistic view of effective urban planning. Exploring global examples in our coursework has broadened my perspective on planning initiatives worldwide. Furthermore, participation in group collaborations and independent studies has been instrumental in preparing me for real-world scenarios where teamwork and innovative thinking are essential. Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds has prepared me to adapt effectively to varied settings in the future. 

Do you have any tips for students looking to study here?

For prospective students considering the University of ºù«Ӱҵ, I would encourage you to get involved in everything. Immerse yourself fully in the vibrant academic community, connect with fellow students and professors, take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities, and explore all the resources ºù«Ӱҵ has to offer on and off-campus. And while ºù«Ӱҵ's topography may present unique challenges, such as hiking up to class daily, embracing the city's natural beauty adds a distinctive charm to the academic experience.
