Profile

Anjali is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Geography since July 2023, working on the Indian Food Systems for Improved Nutrition (INFUSION) project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Her research interests revolve around the intersection of food system transformation, nutrition transition, and public health in low- and middle-income countries. Prior to her current position, Anjali was an Innovative Metrics and Measures for Agriculture and Nutrition Actions (IMMANA) career development fellow at the University of Goettingen, Germany, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), South Asia Region (SAR), New Delhi, India. Anjali received her Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Goettingen, where she studied nutrition transition at different stages of urbanization around the peripheries of the megacity of Bangalore, India. She also holds a master's degree in Sustainable International Agriculture from the University of Goettingen, with a specialization in International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics, and a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Marketing and Cooperation from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.

Research interests

Anjali's research is concentrated on the intersection of agricultural and development economics. Her goal is to comprehend the trade-offs involved in the choices made regarding production and consumption by individuals and households. Additionally, she aims to disentangle the complex pathways that result in multiple forms of malnutrition and thus contribute to the understanding of the complexities of malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries. This encompasses a broad range of topics such as food environment, livelihood diversification, nutrition transition, public health, cognitive development, and allocation of resources within households.
