Our postgraduate community
We are ranked in the top 100 in the world for Philosophy in the . 86 per cent of our research is rated in the highest two categories in the REF 2021, meaning it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent, with all members of staff submitted.. The department is widely seen as one of the friendliest in the country, and is known for its vibrant graduate community. We offer MA degrees in Philosophy, Cognitive Studies, and Political Theory, as well as a wide range of PhD opportunities.
We have around 80 postgraduate students, including many international students from across the globe. Our postgraduates keep busy organising a wide variety of seminars, conferences, reading groups and other activities.

Our postgraduate research blog is a space to learn more about the activities of the masters and PhD philosophy students within the department. The blog aims to cover a variety of topics - from advice for conferences, personal experiences of postgraduate life, as well as the fascinating academic research carried out by our very own PhD students!

Postgraduate seminar
Wednesdays 2-4pm.
This seminar is open to all graduate students in the Department of Philosophy. It runs throughout both semesters, and the students run their own series over the summer. Each week a student presents a paper, followed by discussion. A handout, abstract, or draft of the paper is usually circulated in advance. Anyone from outside the department wishing to attend should email pgrphilosophy@sheffield.ac.uk.
