October

Tatiane Vilaca was awarded the ASBMR Travel Award for the Meeting in Vancouver for her abstract 鈥楾he Association Between Treatment-Related Differences in Total Hip Bone Mineral Density Change and Fracture Risk Reduction for BMD Measurement Intervals of 12, 18 and 24 Months: The FNIH-ASBMR SABRE Project.鈥

Richard Eastell was awarded the ASBMR William F Neuman Award to be presented at the annual meeting in October 2023 in Vancouver.

March

Marian Schini was awarded the ECTS Travel Award for the April 2023 meeting in Liverpool for her abstract 'Pre-treatment bone mineral density (BMD) and the benefit of pharmacologic treatment on fracture risk: Results from the FNIH-ASBMR SABRE Project.'

Ankita Desuja was awarded the ECTS Travel Award for the April 2023 meeting in Liverpool for her abstract 'BMD in type 2 diabetes; relationship to overall bone turnover and bone turnover balance.'


2022

September

Saira Farage O鈥橰eilly (ED PhD student) was awarded 3rd prize for best PhD presentation at the Biomedical Engineering Congress, 8-9 September 2022 at University College London.

April 

John Gostage was awarded best Oral presentation at the ICFSR International Conference on Frailty & Sarcopenia Research, Boston in April 2022.

May

Sayazrah Salam received an ECTS Fellowship Award at the ECTS Congress, Helsinki in May 2022.

March

Lorenza Mattia and Diane Lefley were awarded the joint prize for best oral presentations, Christine Le Maitre and Qizhi Huang was awarded the joint prize for best poster and Ana Lopez won the best snap poster award at the 11th Annual Mellanby Centre Research Meeting in 葫芦影业, 25 March 2022.

Syazrah Salam, Honorary Clinical Fellow in Oncology and Metabolism, University of 葫芦影业 has been awarded a Fellowship from the European Calcified Tissue Society. She will be presented with this prestigious award at the ECTS meeting in Helsinki, May 2022. The funded project concerns, 鈥楿nderstanding bone material properties in advanced chronic kidney disease patients with renal osteodystrophy鈥, and is in collaboration with Enrico Dall鈥橝ra.

Alanna Green, Postdoctoral Fellow in Oncology and Metabolism, University of 葫芦影业 has become a member of Academy of the European Calcified Tissue Society. Scientific excellence and cooperative engagement are key requirements for being elected to the membership. She will join the Academy at the ECTS Annual meeting to be held in Helsinki, May 2022.

Conor Gormley has been awarded the Translational Research Prize at the British Hip Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Bournemouth, March 2022 for his abstract 鈥楧enosumab inhibits osteolysis but what actually happens to disease activity in the loosening membrane?鈥.  Conor is a MSc student supervised by Mark Wilkinson.


2021

October

As part of Bone and Joint Health National Action Week (Oct 12-20, 2021), we congratulate Richard Eastell 鈥 Recognized as an Expertscape World Expert in Bone Diseases 鈥 

Pallavi Battia has been awarded the Young Investigators Award at the ASBMR 2021 Annual Meeting on 1-4 October 2021 for her abstract on Parkinson鈥檚 Disease: falls and fracture risks and the impact on muscle strength and bone mineral density.  Palavi is a Medical Student working with Eugene McCloskey.

Richard Eastell has received the 2021 ASBMR Most Outstanding Clinical Abstract Award for his abstract 鈥榁alidation of the Surrogate Threshold Effect as a Method to Implement Change in BMD as a Surrogate Endpoint for Fracture Outcomes: the FNIH-ASBMR SABRE Project鈥. This award is given to the lead investigator of the highest ranking abstract submitted to a clinical category for presentation at the ASBMR Annual Meeting.

Marian Schini has been awarded a Young Investigator Award by the ASBMR for her abstract, 鈥楻enal Safety Of Zoledronic Acid In Patients With Borderline Kidney Function At A Metabolic Bone Centre In The United Kingdom鈥. The work will be presented as an oral presentation at the ASBMR 2021 Annual Meeting on October 1-4 2021. Marian is a Consultant at STH and clinical research fellow in Oncology and Metabolism and this work was done between STH and Oncology and Metabolism, supervised by Jennie Walsh.

Lorenza Mattia has been awarded a Young Investigator Award by the ASBMR  for her abstract, 鈥楳onitoring Bisphosphonate Treatment In Primary Care: PINP And Osteoporosis In 葫芦影业 Evaluation (POSE Study)鈥. The work will be presented as a plenary poster at the ASBMR 2021 Annual Meeting on October 1-4 2021. Lorenza is a PhD student and this work was done between Oncology and Metabolism, ScHARR and the University of Southern Denmark, supervised by Marian Schini.

Richard Eastell has been awarded the Dent Lecturer by the Bone Research Society.

Mark Wilkinson has been awarded the McKee Prize from the British Hip Society.

John Gostage (PhD Student supervised by Eugene McCloskey) has been awarded the 1st Poster Prize 鈥楥an RANKL inhibition ameliorate sarcopenia? An in vitro study鈥 at inaugural virtual International Sarcopenia Translational Research Conference.

Professor Mark Wilkinson was awarded a 2021 Fellowship Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society in recognition of his outstanding research into bone disease.  The honour is the most prestigious the Society can bestow upon its 5,000 members.  Fellows selected by the Orthopaedic Research Society represent longstanding members of the Society who have demonstrated exemplary service and leadership, substantial achievement, expert knowledge, and significant contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research.  Professor Wilkinson鈥檚 pioneering research has played a pivotal role in helping to improve treatments and care for patients with bone and joint diseases, the most common cause of chronic disability worldwide.


2020

December 

Dr Lorenza Mattia won a commendation from the Royal Osteoporosis Society at their online meeting on 1 December 2020 for her abstract, 鈥楳onitoring osteoporosis in primary care: PINP and osteoporosis in 葫芦影业 evaluation (POSE Study)鈥. Lorenza was a clinical fellow in endocrinology who visited from La Sapienza University in Rome. Her supervisors were Dr Marian Schini and Professor Richard Eastell.

Georgia Perri won a commendation from the Royal Osteoporosis Society at their online meeting on 1 December 2020 for her abstract, 鈥楨ffects of selenium supplementation on biomarkers of bone turnover. Georgia is a CIMA PhD student and her 葫芦影业 supervisors are Dr Jennie Walsh and Professor Richard Eastell; her Newcastle supervisors are Professors John Mathers and Tom Hill.

November 

Dr Syazrah Salam, an Honorary Clinical Fellow in the Department of Oncology and Metabolism, was invited to give the 2020 Yorkshire Turner Warwick Lecture. This Lectureship is awarded by the Royal College of Physicians to clinical trainees to showcase their research or quality improvement projects. Her lecture will focus on the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests, such as biomarkers and high-resolution bone imaging, as a replacement for bone biopsy to diagnose renal osteodystrophy. The Royal College of Physicians said: 鈥榃e had a substantial number of entries and the standard was extremely high. I am therefore very pleased to inform you that our panel of judges has scored your application the highest.  Congratulations and well done!鈥

October 

Dr Marian Schini won an award for her presentation 鈥淎lbumin-adjusted calcium equation and reference interval for adjusted calcium: Data from the UK Biobank鈥 given at the European Calcified Tissue Society meeting online. This was entitled, 鈥楥linical/Public Health Poster Focus Cellec Biotek Award鈥.

Richard Eastell  has been invited to give the Clinical Endocrinology Trust Award Lecture to the European Society for Endocrinology.

August 

Marian Schini was awarded a Young Investigator Award at the World Congress of Osteoporosis by ESCEO/Agnovos 鈥楾he Risk of Hip and Non-Vertebral Fractures in Patients with Parkinson鈥檚 Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis鈥. The work was presented as an oral presentation. Marian is a  consultant and clinical research fellow and this work was done between ScHARR, UCSF and Oncology and Metabolism, supervised by Professor Richard Eastell.

December 

Lisa Dowling and Claudia Tulotti were awarded the joint prize for best oral presentations, Amy Lloyd was awarded best poster and Marco Palanca won the best snap poster award at the 10th Annual Mellanby Centre Research Meeting in 葫芦影业.

October 

Fatma Gossiel was awarded the prize for the best presentation by a postdoc at the CIMA meeting held on 14 to 15 October 2019. Her lecture was entitled 鈥楾he effects of bisphosphonates on bone turnover markers: the TRIO Study鈥. Fatma is the laboratory manager in the Mellanby Centre鈥檚 Bone Biochemistry Laboratory.

Lisa Dowling was awarded the prize for the best presentation by a PhD student at the CIMA meeting held on 14 to 15 October 2019. Her lecture was entitled 鈥楢 cross-sectional study of total hip and femoral neck bone properties in obese and normal-weight older adults鈥. Lisa is a PhD student supervised by Dr Jennie Walsh.
