HAR6215: Nutrition in Health and Disease

Module description
This module is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of nutrition in relation to health and disease. In particular, the content of the module considers what our nutritional requirements are, how we determine the nutritional status of an individual and how nutritional recommendations are adapted depending on certain common conditions including obesity, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Interactive sessions and case-based activities are used to demonstrate how evidence-based practice is used in real-world scenarios.
Objectives
By the end of the unit, a candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Describe nutritional requirements and principles at different stages through the lifespan
- Discuss how nutritional practice changes during health and disease
- Justify appropriate nutritional strategies to manage various diseases and clinical conditions
- Critically discuss the use of nutritional assessment and interventions in practice
- Design and evaluate a diet plan
- Read and critically evaluate papers in the field of human nutrition
- Present research and practice information clearly and concisely in written format
- Evaluate and develop their own communication and professionalism skills
Teaching
This module can also be taken as part of the following courses:
Learning outcomes will be delivered through interactive lectures, group work activities, discussions, debates and self-study, providing students with opportunities to develop their knowledge, understanding, critical evaluation and oral and written communication skills.
Students will participate in classroom activities and develop a reflective portfolio of their academic and professional development which they will discuss with their personal tutors and comment upon in the coursework assignment.
