Clare Gardiner is a professor of palliative care at the School of Allied Health Professionals, Nursing & Midwifery. She leads the ºù«Ӱҵ Palliative and End of Life Care Research Group and is Co-Director of the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre. Clare has over 15 years of experience in palliative care research and has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
In 2015, she was awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship to explore economic aspects of palliative care; in 2020 she was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship to study policies supporting working end-of-life carers. Clare is Chair of the European Association for Palliative Care Reference Group for Family Caregivers.

My research interests are in palliative and end of life care, ageing and older people, and mesothelioma. I am particularly interested in research concerning economic aspects of palliative care, particularly the costs of family caregiving. I have further research interests in social isolation in the elderly, and interventions to reduce loneliness including befriending. I am Co-Director of the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre which conducts research into patient experiences, service organisation and delivery in mesothelioma.

My teaching interests are in research methods and palliative and end of life care. I currently supervise PhD students in the areas of palliative and end of life care.

I am an Associate Editor for BMC Palliative Care, I sit on the Editorial Advisory Board for Palliative Medicine. I chair the EAPC taskforce for Costs of Family Caregiving, I co-chair the EAPC Reference Group for Family Caregivers. I chair the Palliative Care Studies Advisory Group PPI panel.
