- Profile
-
I joined the University in ºù«Ӱҵ in 1991 to set up the degree programme in Orthoptics. The first intake of 30 students was in 1992 and since then we have increased our yearly intake to 40.
During my time in ºù«Ӱҵ Orthoptics has received excellent QA reports from QAA and HPC. I have also co-authored the core Orthoptic text book used in the UK and worldwide. I have continued to participate in research and was invited to give the prestigious Roger Trimble lecture at the British Isles Strabismus Association in 2006.
I am currently head of the Orthoptic section of the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology & Orthoptics. I am a member of the School Teaching Unit Board, Faculty Learning & Teaching Committee, Inter-Professional Learning Group and Fitness to Practise group. I also sit on student review and disciplinary panels.

My research interests are stereovision and testing techniques in Orthoptic practice. My collaboration with Professor John Frisby from the department of Psychology led to the design of a new distance stereotest now used in clinics worldwide.
I am a member of the multi centre Intermittent exotropia research strategy group led by the University of Newcastle.Current projects

- Teaching interests
-
My teaching interest includes curriculum design and development. Since setting up the degree programme in Orthoptics in 1991 I have continued to develop its content and delivery. I have ensured maintenance of currency of clinical practice.
The application of theory to practice and the value of evidence based practice is essential and my oversight of practice placement education has been instrumental in providing reflective practitioners who are fit to practice on graduation.
I have led on Quality assurance events including QAA, HCPC approvals and Periodic Reviews. I sit on the HCPC Fitness to Practice Panels.
I chair Faculty student review committees and am a member of the university disciplinary panel I continue to teach all three years of students on the BMedSci Orthoptics programme utilising a variety of delivery styles. I facilitated the development of a Distance Learning Masters programme, which now attracts students from all over the world and a variety of eye care professionals in addition to Orthoptists.
Recently in collaboration with others, I have developed a module in the sale supply and administration of medicines enabling Orthoptists to gain additional annotation to the HCPC register. I am now leading on the development of an Advanced Clinical Practice route in our Masters programme, which is an exciting and novel development.
I am chair of the British and Irish Orthoptic Society Education and Professional Development committee and national lead for Orthoptic education. I am member of the Ophthalmic Clinical Competency Framework (OCCCF) developing multi-professional education with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, College of Optometry and Ophthalmic nurses.
