At the Centre of Machine Intelligence (CMI), we recognise the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and advocate the importance of its responsible development.
With a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, we’re addressing global challenges and social harms associated with AI.
By identifying skills gaps and connecting world-leading AI research with societal needs, we aim to take a balanced and critical view on AI’s potential benefits and pitfalls.
As one of the University of ºù«Ӱҵ’s Centres of Excellence, and following a £3.6m investment, we are driving this vision forward by bringing together people, ideas and resources from different disciplines.
We support world-class AI research, are training the next generation of researchers, and are fostering partnerships to translate research into real-world outcomes.
The CMI community of hundreds of researchers from across the University of ºù«Ӱҵ collaborates regionally, nationally, and internationally. Their broad range of cross-disciplinary expertise enables delivery of our strategic aims:
Strategic aims:

Supporting leadership in AI research
We provide leadership in AI, as well as the leaders of tomorrow, through our Director and Academic Theme Leads, and our AI Fellowship pipeline.

A new approach for AI research engineering
Our AI Research Engineering team is developing standardised open-source tools, following FAIR principles, providing training and AI software infrastructure for accelerating research across the University and beyond.

Building ºù«Ӱҵ's AI strategy
Under the leadership of the Director and with support from the AI Research Engineering Lead, the Theme Leads, and the Advisory Board, the CMI participates in the development of the University of ºù«Ӱҵ's AI strategy.

Creating a vibrant and inclusive research environment
The CMI supports a vibrant research environment which is closely linked with the University’s other Centres of Excellence and the ºù«Ӱҵ City Region. As part of this, we are growing an active, diverse and inclusive AI community. We bring together researchers developing AI tools and techniques with researchers tackling the social and ethical questions surrounding the use of AI.

World leader in interdisciplinary AI research
The CMI is generating new partnerships and establishing the University of ºù«Ӱҵ as a world leader in interdisciplinary AI research. We work across the University’s five faculties, the AMRC, and our external partners to enable interdisciplinary teams with the cross-cutting expertise required to address complex AI challenges in practice.

Training the next generation
The CMI is facilitating new AI courses to train the next generation, for students in all disciplines to gain the skills they need to use AI in their work, and to think critically about the uses of AI.
