Dr. Alex Graves (2017 cohort)
Project Title: Machinability of Titanium Alloys
Alex began his project in 2017, sponsored by Sandvik Coromant. He came from a background in physics and enjoyed his time working on his project at Sandvik and AMRC, bridging academia and industry, and also traveling to present his research at various conferences around the world. He now works in R&D for his sponsor company in Sweden.
Dr. Chandula Wickramarachchi (2015 cohort)
Project Title: Automated testing of advanced cutting tool materials
Chandy began her project in 2015, sponsored by Element Six UK (E6). This involved working closely with the team at E6, the Dynamics Research Group in Mechancial Engineering, and the AMRC to investigate and apply techniques that can automatically detect imminent tool failure.
Dr. Matthew Brown (2016 cohort)
Project title: Developing a non-destructive evaluation method for examining machined surfaces
Matt began his project in 2016, sponsored by Rolls-Royce and Seco Tools. It focussed on developing a non-destructive method for microstructural machined surface integrity inspection. The supervisory team were able to apply for an international patent (No PCT/GB2020/050795) on the X-ray diffraction technique they developed, a first for the centre.
Dr. Nathan Ray (2013 cohort)
Project title: Correlation between machining monitoring signals, cutting tools wear and surface integrity on High Strength Titanium Alloys
Nathan began his project in 2013, sponsored by Safran Landing Systems (formerly Messier-Bugatti-Dowty). As well as the technical research perspective, he enjoyed personal development provided by the centre in a broad range of interpersonal skills that are invaluable in many different career paths.
