Working can be as fun as you make it, especially when you’re doing something you enjoy and that is rewarding
I decided to become an ambassador as it’s a great opportunity to combine work and study. It allows me to teach other people about psychology, and I get to learn more about other departments within the university.
I’m also a ‘Science & Engineering Champion’. I help to run fun workshops and activities for children in primary schools, and students in high school and sixth form, when they visit the university.
Often, I am able to impart my knowledge about the university and what is required to get onto different courses. It’s great knowing that what I say will help students to decide what they want to do in the next few years, as well as giving them a head start when they get to university.
The students were able to cause my muscles to contract through clenching their fist, providing a great example of how electrical signals are used in the body. Seeing the pupils enjoy the demonstration always brings a smile to my face

One of the best parts about being an ambassador is being able to run practical experiments and activities that other students don’t. For example, when completing a workshop on touch, I was able to use a TENS machine, which linked up to people using electrodes on the skin.

Working as a ‘Science & Engineering Champion’ has shown me that work doesn’t have to be a chore. Working can be as fun as you make it, especially when you’re doing something you enjoy and that is rewarding. I’ve also found that my ability to communicate has improved a lot! Additionally, I feel like I’m more responsible and reliable now than I was when I came to university.
Being an ambassador has allowed me to meet people from other departments and on a range of courses, making me feel more integrated in the university as a whole, rather than just in my own department, as well as allowing me to learn more about the university. This job has also allowed me to build up my contacts which will help me in the future when I begin to look for work after my degree.
